Is It Getting Harder to Be a Real Estate Agent? What’s Working for Massachusetts Agents Right Now

The residential real estate market is challenging right now, and being a real estate agent isn’t getting any easier. Across the South Shore, Boston, Cape Cod, Metro West, Northern Middlesex and the Merrimack Valley, and Bristol County, agents are dealing with fewer transactions, longer sales cycles, and more competition for every client. Even so, there are real opportunities. Over the past two months, our team generated more than 143 leads through strategic partnerships, and we’re continuing to invest in what helps agents grow, whatever the market is doing.

Why does the real estate market feel so hard for agents right now?

Agents are working harder for every closing. Fewer transactions mean fewer chances to earn. Longer sales cycles mean each deal takes more time and patience. More competition means every listing appointment and buyer consultation is harder to win.

None of this is a reflection of an agent’s talent. The market has changed, and the business model that worked a few years ago doesn’t produce the same results today.

What it means: If your business feels harder than it used to, you’re not imagining it. Working harder doesn’t fix that. A better setup does.

Are there still opportunities for real estate agents in a slow market?

Yes. Slower markets reward agents with strong relationships, reliable systems, and a steady flow of opportunities. Clients still buy and sell homes in every market. They just pick their agent more carefully, and they find that agent through trusted relationships more than ever.

Agents who have support behind them can keep momentum while others stall out. They have lead sources, technology that saves time, and colleagues to work through tough deals with.

What it means: A challenging market separates agents who are building a business from agents who are waiting for the market to come back.

How did our team generate 143+ leads in two months?

Over the past two months, our team generated more than 143 leads through strategic partnerships. That pipeline didn’t come from the market getting easier. It came from deliberately investing in relationships that bring opportunities to our agents.

We keep investing in four areas:

  • Relationships: partnerships that put our agents in front of people who are ready to buy or sell
  • Technology: tools that help agents work efficiently and follow up consistently
  • Systems: repeatable processes so agents spend more time with clients and less time on administration
  • Opportunities: a steady flow of new conversations agents can turn into business

What it means: Leads are what an agent’s business runs on. When the team brings opportunities to agents, they can focus on serving clients.

What should agents look for in a real estate team or brokerage?

I believe the right environment, support, and collaboration can make a tremendous difference in an agent’s success. When you evaluate where to build your business, look beyond the commission split. Ask these questions:

  • Does this team create opportunities for its agents, or does it expect you to generate everything yourself?
  • Is there real collaboration, where agents share knowledge, help each other, and celebrate wins?
  • Are the technology and systems actually useful, or just more logins?
  • Is leadership invested in your growth when the market is tough, and not only when it’s easy?

What it means: The right environment won’t do the work for you, but it will make sure your work goes further.

Feeling stuck? What does a confidential conversation look like?

If you’re an agent who feels stuck, is frustrated with your current situation, or simply wants to take your business to the next level, I’d love to connect.

There’s no pressure and no obligation. A conversation is a chance to talk through where your business is today, where you want it to go, and whether our team could help you get there. Everything stays confidential.

Sometimes a conversation is all it takes to open the door to new opportunities.

Late 2026 Outlook for Massachusetts Agents

Heading into the end of 2026 and the new year, agents should expect the conditions they’re facing now to continue. Clients will keep moving cautiously, competition for listings will stay intense, and transactions will take longer to close. The agents who build momentum into 2027 will be the ones with strong relationships, dependable lead sources, and a supportive team. If you want to talk about your plans for the year ahead, my door is open.
